Most Texans are surprised to hear that Dallas is the third largest city by population, behind Houston and San Antonio. However, the Dallas Fort-Worth Metro is the nation’s 4th largest metropolitain area, ahead of Houston. M&A activity in DFW is rocketing higher in 2021, aligned with several trends:
- Baby Boomers are a large percentage of business owners and are planning for an exit, retiring in large numbers
- Small business owners are looking to sell due to health reasons, divorce or to move closer to family
- Public company valuation has never been higher and a strong IPO market has led to many mergers
- Startups in technology and software continue to attract investors, funding mergers and buyouts
- Conflict with China has spurred domestic manufacturing to reshore in Texas, leading to acquisitions
- A bounce in oil and gas prices created strong demand for mergers in 2021 with 40 transactions
In addition, Dallas Fort-Worth continued to grow during the pandemic, with a population migration from California and other states. From 2010-2020, the region has grown 18.5%, compared with the national average of 6.3 percent. The Metroplex region is a leader in air transportation, oil and gas extraction, banking, telecommunications and data processing/hosting.
